It has been several months since I moved to beautiful Stonington Borough, the most charming little village only 4 miles away from Mystic, CT and 8 miles from the Rhode Island border. The house I rented is lovely but it came furnished and the rooms were painted in a variety of colors. This post is about how I updated the interior and ‘beautified’ the exterior, hence the before and after photos. Come on in!

I have a great affection for small homes and have been very lucky to be able to style hundreds of them over the years with Mark Lohman who has also photographed all my books. It always amazes me to see how resourceful and talented homeowners are. They take an ordinary house and turn it into a delightful and personal home. Case in point, Darielle Tennenbaum’s darling cottage in northern California.
If you don’t already know about CHIC & COUNTRY a beautiful digital UK magazine you owe it to yourself to go to their website (https://www.chicandcountry.com) to discover the many fabulous home stories featuring the styles you love (French Country, Romantic, Nordic, Shabby, and more) but also beautiful gardens, food and flowers.
I know many of you have a fondness for French style (not just French Country) and a penchant for romantic elements.
Fortunately, French and romantic styles are made for each other. And both often meet in a variety of ways––from pristine to rustic, traditional, elegant, vintage, salvage, primitive, and more. But when it comes to the ‘romance’ part of the equation a little frill goes a long way! Think “ruffles with restraint.”
